Description

The gourd-shaped vase, first created during the Tang Dynasty, derives its form from the natural shape of a calabash. In Chinese, “gourd” (húlu) is a homophone for “fortune and prosperity” (fú lù), endowing the vessel with auspicious meaning. Cherished by generations of artisans and admirers alike, it has become one of the most beloved and enduring forms in traditional Chinese ceramics.

This particular piece was created by Master Xu Jianxin, using his signature opalescent glaze. The surface is soft and luminous, its tone gentle yet rich. The vase’s form flows with elegant continuity—graceful curves and harmonious proportions evoke a quiet rhythm. The opalescent glaze, known for its clouded, jade-like quality, reveals subtle variations under light, imbuing the piece with a sense of quiet vitality.

More than just a vessel, this work embodies the spirit of traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage. From its symbolic form to the refined glazing technique, it reflects both technical mastery and artistic sensitivity. It is no surprise that this piece draws admiration and contemplation from all who encounter it—truly a modern treasure rooted in ancient tradition.
