Description

This exquisite wash basin, or xi, is a masterful homage to the refined ceramics of the Southern Song Dynasty, evoking the elegance and restraint of China’s storied literati culture. Traditionally, xi were practical vessels in both daily life and the scholar’s studio, used for ablution and ritual cleansing, yet they also carried profound cultural and aesthetic significance. Their origins trace back to the Qin and Han periods, initially cast in bronze or molded from pottery. With the rise of porcelain production during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, ceramic wash basins became increasingly indispensable in domestic and scholarly settings.

By the Song Dynasty, the pursuit of naturalistic, understated, and subtly refined beauty transformed these utilitarian objects into works of delicate artistry. The lotus-petal rim, or kui kou, emerged as a signature motif, gradually featuring six, eight, or more petals, with gracefully flowing edges reminiscent of a flower in full bloom. Southern Song official kilns, renowned as one of the five great kilns of the era, produced porcelain specifically for the imperial court, elevating the lotus-petal wash basin to a pinnacle of craftsmanship and aesthetic sophistication.

This modern creation meticulously emulates the Southern Song official kiln style, crafted from premium porcelain with a fine, dense body. The glaze exhibits a warm, jade-like luster, combining subtle powder blue and soft ivory tones. The surface naturally displays fine crackle patterns, known as “golden threads and iron lines,” enhancing its antique charm. The lotus-petal rim is perfectly proportioned, with smooth, flowing contours, while the transition from rim to body is gentle and harmonious, evoking a flower quietly in bloom.

The overall silhouette is elegant and poised, embodying the simplicity and grace of Song-era porcelain while showcasing contemporary mastery in fine detailing. This piece is both a tribute to the classical forms of the Southern Song dynasty and a statement of refined taste, making it an exceptional addition to any collection.
